1,300 Graduates In Anambra Undergo Employment Skills Training

No fewer than 1, 300 graduates in Anambra State who are beneficiaries of the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) of the Federal Ministry of Finance are currently undergoing training on employment skills.

Addressing participants yesterday in one of the venues of the training in Awka, the state capital, Mr. Uche Alamefule who represented the GIS project director, Mr. Peter Papka stated that the state is among the states nationwide with the highest number of graduates that registered for the scheme.

The project director stated that about 25,186 out of a total of 305,780 graduates who have currently registered for the scheme nationwide have been deployed for the employment skills acquisition training.

He explained that the GIS which was formerly funded under SURE-P was transferred to the Finance Ministry for funding when SURE-P was scrapped because it serves as a veritable stop-gap between unemployment and employment periods for graduates.

"So far, about 9,387 have exited the scheme while over 1000 have secured jobs or started their own businesses", Papka stated.

The federal government according to him, through the initiative was committed to finding solutions to youth unemployment especially for graduates.

He said that the federal government's funding of the scheme from regular budget clearly attested to the great prospect GIS has in facilitating the enhancement of graduates skills for self employment.
