In his keynote speech while opening the three-day conference, Xi reflected on the outcomes from the first conference. He said it has helped Wuzhen to become a "smart city." The Internet has aided in boosting the city's tourism, healthcare and economy, transforming the traditional city.
"Wuzhen is a vivid example of what can be achieved by combining tradition with modernity," Xi said. "It showcases the innovative development of the Internet in China and reflects the principle that global Internet development is shared by all."
Since China joined the World Wide Web 21 years ago, the country has seen a rapid surge in the application of information technology with e-commerce activities currently at its peak. With more than 670 million Internet users and 4.13 million websites, online sales, while providing convenience to consumers, have boosted businesses with record high sales. During this year's Singles' Day sales on November 11, China's e-commerce giant Alibaba stacked a $14.32 billion sale, a 60% increment from last year.
