Low calorie food makes man fatter, sues supermarket

Although Mr. Xu worked out every day, he couldn't control his weight – it kept adding on. And he blames it on the biscuits.

In 2014, Mr. Xu spent more than 3,000 yuan to buy 10 boxes of Yaoshantang's biscuits – it was deemed to have low calories. He was eating those biscuits to substitute his smoking habit.

Some people often resist their nicotine addiction by chewing gums, eating peppermints or low-calorie biscuit.

However, the biscuits that Mr. Xu was eating were having an adverse effect on his weight. Upon investigating, he found that calories on the biscuits were four times higher than its label – there were 2,312 kilo joules of calories per 100 grams instead of 560 kilo joules as mentioned in the packet.

In 2015, Mr. Xu sued the supermarket where he bought those biscuits demanding compensation. However, the supermarket asserted that there were no food safety and quality problems with the biscuits.

But Chutian Metro Daily reported on Saturday that the court has ordered the supermarket to compensate Mr. Xu with 10 times the amount he paid for the biscuits. It said the supermarket defied food safety law.

However, following the verdict, many have taken to social media to question the court's judgment. Most of the online users said Mr. Xu should have sued the biscuit manufacturer and not the supermarket.

"The manufacturer did not compensate to him?" said @Bushiyouzhidewudixiaopengyou/.

"It is you who have eaten too much and you're blaming it on others," @Yuyuesegongwudedapengyou commented.
