The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has picked
holes in the assets of President Muhammadu
Buhari declared by the presidency.
Reading from the document submitted to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), presidential aide Garba Shehu had disclosed that President Buhari, at swearing in, had N30 million, 270 heads of cattle, among other things.
However, the PDP wondered how the president's cattle has increased to 270 heads from 150 just months ago.
According to reports, following his victory as the
presidential flag bearer of the All Progressives
Congress (APC), Buhari made an unofficial
declaration of his assets.
"I have at least one million naira in my bank, having
paid N5.5 million to pick my form from my party. I
have around 150 cattle because I am never
comfortable without cows. I have a house each in
Kaduna, Kano, and Daura which I borrowed money
to build. I never had a foreign account since I
finished my courses in the USA, India and the UK. I
never owned any property outside Nigeria. Never."
Considering the fact that cattle usually give birth to
a calf at once and has a gestation period of nine
months, it appears illogical that the herd has grown
to 270, except more heads were added.
The PDP had also referred to the alleged N1 million
the president had in his account, but looking at the
statement credited to Buhari again, he said he had
"at least N1 million" which means he might have
had N30 million or even more. Buhari did not lie
about this.
The statement by Garba Shehu did not state the
number of cars the president owned, giving rise to
opinions that it may be ridiculously high.
Whichever way we view it, the president has
fulfilled his promise of declaring his assets within
his first 100 days in office. Whether the assets
declared represents the true state of Buhari's
wealth when he became president is for us to find
out. Mr President has done his part.
