2015 WAWA festival: Ndi Igbo urged to embrace their culture

The need for Ndigbo to embrace their positive culture and tradition has been stressed.
This was highlighted when the natives of Enugu State residing in Awka, and beyond, celebrated their 2015 WAWA cultural festival, powered by Saint Raphael's Zone of Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Awka.

Amaka Chibuzor Okoye, who witnessed the ceremony, reports thatthe Cultural festival, which featured investiture of some WAWA sons and daughters who have distinguished themselves in various spheres of life, including an ABS staff Lady Chinasaokwu Nwolisa, attracted members of ABS family and other people who have regard for Igbo culture.

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Comrade Leo Imoka, expressed joy with the initiative saying that it shows that there is interstate relationship within the South East.

Comrade Imoka called on those who see culture as fetish to desist from such act, noting that culture is dynamic and must be promoted.


Earlier in a homily to mark the celebration at Saint Mary's Catholic Church Awka, a visiting priest, Reverend Father Gerald Ejimbeonwu, said that culture is an identity for which people are known, pointing out that the church does not condemn or see it as fetish and urged them to use their tradition, which is Godly, to worship Christ and distance themselves from paganism.

In his speech, the Chairman on the occasion, Comrade Don Onyenji, who represented the Managing Director of the ABS, Mr Uche Nworah, reiterated the ABS commitment to promoting Igbo culture, language and norms, adding that many Igbo programmes have been introduced in the ABS that will impact positively on the lives of the younger ones so as to ensure that Igbo language does not go into extinction.

The Zonal Leader Saint Raphael's Zone, Chief Charles Nnaji, said the celebration was aimed at promoting their cultural heritage, expressing optimism that the festival would unite them and create an avenue for them to know themselves better.

Lady Chinasaokwu Nwolisa, who was conferred with an award of Ada Di Ora Mma of WAWA, felt elated for the honour done her, promising that she will continue to do that for which they found her worthy to be honoured and assured that she will step up efforts at promoting Igbo language and culture.
