The State Government has distributed relief materials worth over five million naira to Internally Displaced Persons at Aguleri-Otu in Anambra East Local Government Area.
The Internally Displaced Persons, made up of about one hundred families, are victims of the recent invasion of some parts of Aguleri-Otu by suspected militants from Odeke and Echeno communities in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The relief materials given to the IDPs, include mattresses, blankets, towels, bags of rice and beans, gallons of groundnut oil, buckets and jerry cans among others.
According to Mr. Onyejekwe, a director in the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, who handed over the items to the victims, the areas mostly affected by the invasion were, Enugwu Otu, Eziagulu Otu and Nkpu-Nnando in Aguleri Otu community.
Mr. Onyejekwe, explained that Governor Willie Obiano is committed to bringing succour to the IDPs, pointing out that the state government is not relenting in its collaboration with the Kogi state and federal governments, to find an enduring solution to the boundary dispute between the two states.
He implored the leaders of the affected communities to ensure equitable sharing of the largesse from the state government in order to promote peace and harmony.
Mr. Onyejekwe disclosed that the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has also promised to bring relief materials to the IDPs at Aguleri Otu.
For his part, the President-General of Enugwu-Otu community, Prince Benjamin Onyenwife, expressed gratitude to the state Government for responding positively to the plight of the IDPs.
He however called on the National Boundary Commission to expedite action on boundary demarcation in the area in order to ensure enduring peace between Aguleri-Otu of Anambra state and Ibaji people of Kogi State.
Prince Onyenwife also stressed the need for the federal government to post neutral security operatives to the Anambra and Kogi State boundary, so as to curtail the incidence of bloody clashes between Ibaji and Aguleri-Otu people.
Other community leaders and women who spoke of their plight expressed gratitude to Governor Obiano for donating relief materials to them.
