Bride race kicks off in Bangkok

Hundreds of brides-to-be in Bangkok geared up for a race, named the "Running of the Brides", on Sunday. The winner will be awarded 1 million Thai baht (around 27,928 US dollars).

However, winning is not as easy as the name of the race indicates as it's not just a simple running race. The brides-to-be have to wear their wedding gowns to run with their husbands. The winner are the combined times of the couple.

While the race is fun, it points to a stark economic reality. Thailand is increasingly trying to attract high cost international weddings. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand couples from India are their biggest market for these weddings that can cost over half a million US dollars, although they are looking to attract more Chinese ceremonies as well.
