Enugu state police command has released a statement stating
that the pro-Biafra protesters arrested in the city of Enugu were mainly
non-residents and have been charged in court with the offence of
unlawful assembly.
The alleged protestors are understood to be members of Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).
According to police spokesman Ebere Amaraizu, the protestors were arrested after having illegally assembled at the Naira Triangle on Monday night.
”This attracted attention of the officers and men of the command and following the failure of the said persons to disperse after being so requested by the police,” Amaraizu said.
A number of pro-Biafra agitators were arrested in the act of committing the offence of unlawful assembly, while others were arrested after they had fled the scene.
The arrested persons include Nwangwu Friday of 26 years, Chekwube Eneta of 28 years, Chigozie Mba of 29 years, Isaiah Ogazi of 28 years, Onyekachukwu Uzoma of 43 years, Onyemalu Princewill of 26 years, Israel Ani of 18 years and Ugwuobu Kelechi of 24 years.
Police investigations disclosed that many of them were from other states in Nigeria but were hired to appear in Enugu to attend an allegedly unlawful assembly and related processions.
The police command has charged and transferred the suspects to magistrate court 111 Enugu East.
When the case was called before the judge and the counts of the charge were read to the accused persons, they all pled not guilty and were remanded in prison custody.
The case against the alleged pro-Biafra agitators was adjourned to February 10.
The Enugu police command said it will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that Enugu state remains peaceful and free from separatist pro-Biafra agitation, which it condemns in the strongest possible terms.
