Bridge collapse, state government called upon to intervene

The state government has been called upon to urgently intervene on the erosion and flood-caused problems confronting residents of Urukpaleke and Obuagu-Osili Villages of Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area.

The residents made the call when the ABS visited there, to assess the level of damage caused by the flood during a recent downpour.

Emmanuel Okonkwo reports that during the visit, it was observed that the old fashioned bridge linking the two villages had collapsed, thereby making vehicular movement impossible.

Only a make-shift structure provides access to the villages.

It was also discovered that the walls of some buildings were pulled down while some compounds are under serious threat.

Speaking to the ABS, the Urukpaleke village Works Chairman, Nze Robert Ifeacho, and the Vice Chairman, Prince Alex Ifeacho, lamented that children of the two villages no longer go to school as a result of the development.

They therefore appealed to the State Government to intervene, in order to save the lives and property of the villagers.

A civil servant who lives in the area, Mrs. Nkiruka Anaedom, who extolled the efforts of Governor Willie Obiano in developing the state, requested the government to come to their rescue, as vehicle owners could no longer go to work in their cars, while pedestrian movement has been seriously hampered.

Some other residents, including Mr. Kenneth Anagor and Mrs. Grace Obidike, said the community market could no longer be accessed and many strangers in the villages are now parking out because of the inaccessibility of the road.
