Provision of adequate nutrition during infancy has been described as a basic requirement for the development and promotion of optimum growth, health and behaviour of a child.
The Chairman of Aguata Local Government area, Chief Chukwuma Umeoji who made this known while speaking to the ABS at Ekwulobia noted that breast milk meets the nutritional and other requirements of infants for optimal growth and survival.
According to Chief Umeoji, the act of breastfeeding promotes love and bond between the mother and child.
He urged Nursing Mothers to always breast-feed their babies for the first six months and thereafter introduce complementary foods while still continuing breast-feeding for up to twenty-four months to help conquer malnutrition in the children and achieve the Millennium Development Goals target accordingly.
