Correspondent of Newswatch Times in Onitsha., Mr. Cyprian Ebele, on Thursday, September 17, 2015, fell victim of Police show of power when he was ordered to be detained by the Onitsha Inland Town Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Mr. Cosmas Eze.
Trouble started for the journalist, who was taking a sick woman to the General Hospital Onitsha when he approached the Girls Secondary School junction on Awka road and stopped for a bus blaring a siren and negotiating the Ado Girls Secondary School junction to pass.
For not screeching on his brake and stood at attention the traffic warden, Mr. Obasi Ifeanyi, approached him and accused him of disobeying traffic rule.
All pleas fell on deaf ears. The real trouble began when he demanded that the
daughter of the sick woman who was in the front seat should disembark so that he would take the car to the station with the sick woman.
The refusal of the daughter of the sick woman to disembark attracted the attention of a higher ranking officer, a woman Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mrs. Victoria H. Dubuzo, who said that she was the head of traffic in the Police Division.
