On Friday, September 11, 2015, the police confirmed that it has recovered the bodies of six traders, who drowned in Sakamori drainage channel during last Saturday's torrential rain.
The six traders, who traded on clothes were said to have been plunged into the deep Sakamori drainage that ran through the length of Onitsha emptying into the River Niger during the torrential rain and were swept away by the furious flood water.
Eyewitnesses said that the incident happened late in the evening at the foot of Upper Iweka Flyover by Ezeiweka Road Junction, along Onitsha-Owerri road, Onitsha, Anambra State.
According to the account, the clothes sellers were standing on planks used to cover the top of the Sakamori gutter, which they converted to kiosks, when suddenly the makeshift plank caved in and all six traders plunged into the gutter.
Cries for assistance were raised but nobody dared do much in the face of the raging flood.
But, Police from Okpoko and Atani divisions confirmed they have recovered bodies of the traders.
The Divisional Police Officer at Okpoko, told newsmen on phone that only one of the corpses was recovered from a deep water drainage within his own jurisdiction.
