A 37-year-old teacher at Federal Government Girls’ College, Onitsha is now Nigerian best secondary school teacher.

Rose Nkemdilim Obi who has been teaching Chemistry and Mathematics for the past 12 years when she had her first degree emerged as the best following her emergence as the overall winner of this year's Maltina Teacher of the Year.

She was declared winner among 10 state finalists at the award ceremony in Lagos on Monday. Unfortunately, only 19 out of the 36 states of the federation had their entries found worthy for recognition by the independent panel of judges constituted for the purpose and led by Professor Pat Utomi.

Maltina Teacher of the Year Award is an initiative of Felix-Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund on the stable of Nigerian Breweries Plc as its corporate social responsibility to recognise, celebrate and motivate hadworking and committed Nigerian teachers. This year's edition is the first in the series with the hope to make it a yearly affair.

However, Obi was given N1 million and a trophy as reward for her effort and would be given additional N1 million yearly for the next five years while her school would be provided with 25 million worth of a block of six classrooms.

Her first and second runner- up, Binta Muhammed from Borno and Daniel Udiong from Akwa Ibom States respectively were also given 750,000 and 500,000 for their efforts while all the 10 finalists including the top three also went home with N500,000 each .

Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries, Mr. Nicolas Vervelde congratulated the winner and urged others and those who could not make it to the final this year to work harder so as to be able to get to the top in future editions.

He promised that the company would continue to invest in Nigerian education sector so as to develop the economy
