ONITSHA—About 10,000 indigenes from three local government areas in Anambra State have been rendered homeless by flood.
The affected areas are Ogbaru, Anambra east and Anambra west local government areas where farmers have fled their homes to join their relatives and friends while others have moved to reserved camps in the upland where government had provided for them.
Apart from houses, farmlands had been submerged by the surging flood in the reverine areas, which destroyed their crops estimated in millions of Naira.
Speaking to Vanguard, a lawmaker representing Ogbaru in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Benson Nwawulu urged victims to without delay avail themselves of the camps in the upland already provided by government.
He hinted that government had provided about 21 speed boats for people in the affected areas, saying that at present, Ogbaru, Odekpe and Osamala farms and houses have been submerged.
Another member of the House of Assembly representing Anambra east, Mr Obinna Emenaka also spoke in the same vein, saying that the surging flood in his area has not only affected houses and farmlands but fish ponds.
He said government was taking proactive measure to assist the people through SEMA and called on the federal government to declare Anambra state a flood disaster area.
The member representing Anambra west constituency in the state legislature, Mr Victor Okoye called on various levels of government to intervene and requested that the people should be quickly evacuated from the affected areas in Anambra West.
