Motion as it was moved by Senator Mrs. Uche Ekwunife at the Senate plenary yesterday.

URGENT NEED TO REHABILITATE THE ENUGU – ONITSHA EXPRESS WAY WHICH IS IN A DEPLORABLE CONDITION
----------------------------------------------------------------
The senate

Notes that the Enugu-Onitsha dual carriage way was constructed about thirty four (34) years ago to facilitate the socio-economic activities of the people of the old Anambra State as well as other Nigerians who ply the ever busy highway daily;

Worried that the highway which was constructed primarily to enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the people has now cut off at different points, thereby providing opportunity for robbers and miscreants who hang around and cause untold havoc on unsuspecting Nigerians who go about their normal activities;

Aware that the Enugu-Onitsha highway which is one of the busiest highways in the country in view of the heavy vehicular traffic that ply the route on daily basis, and of significant economic importance to the South East zone has today become death trap to motorists. The attendant loss of precious lives and properties worth millions of naira on this road can only be imagined;

Further aware that a journey from Onitsha to Enugu which used to take less than 45 minutes now takes commuters four (4) hours while a lot of cattle and food stuff dealers from other states drive all day to access Anambra State. As we speak, 80 trucks carrying perishable goods, containers and livestock are stock along the way while over 20 have often fallen while trying to navigate the bad roads and pot holes. Many truck drivers for 0ver 5 days now have been sleeping on that road.

Cognizant that communities located along the highway also have their own share of the hardship, following constant diversions to their village roads by heavy trucks trying to access Anambra State.

Resolves to:
Call on the Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Works to as a matter of urgency put action in place to ensure the road is put in use, as Anambra State would not be cut off from other states.

I so move
