The attention of Anambra State Government has also been drawn to the mindless and serial vandalization of transformer cables and electric wires installed in and around the state by hoodlums particularly along Awkuzu and Enugwu-Ukwu electricity transmission lines which supplies power to some parts of Awka metropolis and environs. This act as reprehensible and unacceptable as it is, has not only led to the current unavailability of power supply being experienced in some parts of Awka capital city and environs but is gradually crippling the state economy.
Government is scandalized by the obvious sabotage of its effort to ensure that Ndi Anambra enjoys relative power supply not only for their office and household needs but also for those who require power to carry on their small and medium scale businesses.
Also worrisome is the act whereby some people construct buildings and stalls on the right of way of electricity transmission. Such acts, have in addition, contributed to the disruption of power supply and also constitute health hazards to the general public.
The State government is by this announcement calling on all communities in the state to henceforth ensure adequate protection of government facilities provided for their wellbeing and overall development of the State. Traditional Rulers and Presidents General of town unions in the state are also by this announcement directed to ensure the adequate provision of security for electricity transformers and cables installed in their areas.
Government has set up a joint task force of law enforcement agencies and local vigilant outfits to provide 24 hour security for electric transformers, cables and wires. The task force has been directed to also carry out spot checks on those who deal in second hand electric cables and wires or sell transformer oils to ensure that suspected stolen electric wires, cables and transformer oils are not sold in the open market. Anybody or group of persons caught or found to aid and abet in the vandalization of transformer cables and wires or stealing of transformer oil would henceforth be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. Similarly, buildings or stalls constructed on the right of way of electricity transmissions would henceforth be demolished at the owners expense.
Ndi Anambra, let us support government to make life meaningful for us.
Dr Mrs Uju Nwogu,
Hon. Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism
