This development was a follow up of the motion sponsored by Senator Uche Ekwunife on the floor of the Senate on the urgent need to rehabilitate the Enugu-Onitsha Express way which is in a deplorable condition and the numerous erosion sites threatening economic activities in the state.
Through the resilience and hard work of Senator Ekwunife who is also a member of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Works, the Senate mandated the committee led by Most Distinguished Senator Barnabas Gemade to visit the affected states in the South-East and South-South zones of Nigeria.
The states visited include, Anambra, Abia, Imo, Akwa Ibom, and Edo states. The Mandate of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on this mission were:
(1) to visit communities with prevalent gully erosions, landslides and washouts to commiserate with them.
(2) Collate extremely dilapidated Federal Roads for attention of the government.
Speaking to News Men, Senator Ekwunife frowned at the level and magnitude of the devastations which she termed as frightening. According to her, "the approach is no longer an envelope system of budgeting that cannot take care of huge devastation we have witnessed today as it will get to a stage where the Federal Government will not only provide palliative measures but employ holistic approach to arrest the erosion menace in Anambra State".
Senator Ekwunife noted that the dilapidated Enugu-Onitsha express way which is also collapsing as a result of a devastating erosion threatening to cut off the road, observed that the road is a major thoroughfare that links South-East to South-South, South-West and North-Central states, so that, if nothing is done immediately, this will bring to a halt economic activities in Anambra and South-East zone.
She finally advised that the Federal Government should as a matter of urgency, intervene as such projects are beyond the lean resources of the state governments.
