Governor Obiano stated this at the third edition annual lecture of the NDLEA Anambra State Command held at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women's Development Centre, Awka.
The lecture whose theme was "Curbing Illicit drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria, how far, how well the role of the state and local government administrations attracted a large cadre of from diverse disciplines stakeholders.
Governor Obiano while appreciating the efforts of the command in organizing the lecture, noted that families have critical roles to play in ensuring that the society was rid of illicit drugs consumption and trafficking as according to him, children most times copy whatever their parents do whether positive or negative and called on churches and civil society organizations to equally join in the crusade against illicit drugs and trafficking.
The Governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, regretted a situation where over two hundred people out of two hundred and thirty five Nigerians that are languishing in jail in far away Thailand for drug related offences are Ndi Anambra promised that government will continue to give adequate and maximum support to the agency for drug free Anambra State.
For Sector Commander of the NDLEA, Mr Sule Momodu, the lecture which was third in the series became pertinent because of the increasing number of drug related issues in the state.
Mr Momodu who revealed that they convicted about thirty suspects last year, pointed out that cocaine and heroin consumption are on the increase in the state, saying that the agency and the government must synergize and adopt more tactical strategies to fight the menace.
The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Mrs Uju Neoga in a remark, said her Ministry will collaborate with the NDLEA in sensitizing and creating awareness on the dangers of illicit drugs in the state and appealed to parents to monitor very well their children's attitudes and the type of company they keep.
In a paper presentation, Dr Kabir Mato from the department of political science and International Relations, University of Abuja, represented by Dr Sherriff Ghali of same department, said that the lecture would go a long way in building synergy between the agency and the communities with a view to streamlining and creating a frontier that would form an all inclusive approach to tackling drugs menace in the country.
Two of the students, Miss Vivian Ofiaelli from Saint John of God secondary School and Master Anthony Ezuluike of Igwebuike Grammar School both in Awka, affirmed the event that they have widened the scope of their knowledge on drug abuse.
