For Jin, the last few weeks of 2015 were harrowing – her house was buried in the landslide in Shenzhen, she was pregnant and left with no personal possessions.
But on New Year's Day, the arrival of her baby, she said, was a sign of hope and a new beginning.
The family named the baby Yuxi. In Chinese, Xi means hope.
After the delivery, Jin recalled her trauma after the landslide to Yangcheng Evening News, a Guangdong-based media outlet.
With her delivery date close, Jin was admitted to the Central Hospital of Guangming New District soon after the landslide as she reported abdominal discomfort. She was also traumatized by the accident.
While at the hospital, people from the community rushed to her help. They helped Jin with securing relief materials to ease her daily life and parturition. She said she was thankful for the community's support – it has not only helped her survive but also given the new mother new hope.
Guangming New District of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province was hit by a landslide in mid-December. 12 people were dead and 62 were still missing as of December 30, 2015. The landslide has been defined as a man-made accident caused by illegal landfill of waste dump.
